SPOTLIGHT’S ON!
2009 Disaster Management Workshop Series
Tropical Shipping, in partnership with CCAA and the various island government Emergency Management agencies, is pleased to take the lead role in the 2009 Disaster Management Workshop series. The program brings an innovative approach to disaster management and business continuity in the Caribbean.
The goal of this series is to increase awareness of the most efficient and effective techniques used in disaster management.
“Since Hurricane Hugo in 1989, we have consistently helped the islands of the Caribbean in times of need,” said Tropical Shipping President Rick Murrell. “We look forward to sharing our insight, experience and expertise to help each country with its disaster recovery planning process.”
Co-sponsored by the destination governments’ Disaster Management Agencies and private sector, the 2009 series schedule is as follows:
| April 2 & April 3 |
St. Thomas & St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands |
| April 29 & 30 |
Nassau & Freeport, The Bahamas |
| June 4 |
Phillipsburg, St. Maarten |
Participants will be able to take advantage of instruction in several key areas, including:
Planning assistance from national disaster agencies
Establishing the framework for more effective public- and private-sector procedures
Developing plans to specifically address the economic damage disasters cause
Finalizing plans that underscore participants’ commitment to the needs of first responders and their families
“Fundamentally these workshops are designed to formalize and document a private-public sector plan to assist one another in times of crisis”, commented CCAA Executive Director & CEO, Anton Edmunds.
The Disaster Management Workshop series has been sponsored and conducted by Tropical Shipping as a part of its community service activities since the mid-1990s. Past workshops have been held in a number of destinations to include Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, the Turks and Caicos Islands and Trinidad. The workshop series has been housed under the CCAA umbrella since 2007.
As in the past, the target audience in each host country will include key businesses leaders and importers, Chambers of Commerce, public safety authorities, disaster preparedness managers, private industry security, contingency planners and operations personnel.
